Clotilde Jiménez

Clotilde Jiménez (b. 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii; lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico), driven by a focus on materiality, blends line and collage through his reuse of everyday materials such as wallpaper, clothing, magazine clippings, and Mexican craft paper.

Jiménez sources antique, modern, and contemporary art references to explore the limitations placed on the body in relation to race and gender. Whether through painting, sculpture, or even operatic work, the superimposition of materiality allows him to tell several stories at the same time and to render his lived experiences through an expansive archive. His graphic deployment of line and form compiles into linear simplifications of public and private life.

Jiménez received his MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in London and his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art. He has exhibited at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) (San Francisco, CA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (Cleveland, OH), the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (Los Angeles, CA), the Norton Museum of Art (West Palm Beach, FL), the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico (San Juan, Puerto Rico), Museo Jumex (Mexico City, Mexico), Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City, Mexico), Nottingham Contemporary (Nottingham, UK), and Camden Arts Centre (London, UK), among others. In 2023, he was commissioned to create the official posters of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

His work is held in notable collections such as the Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection (New York, NY), Colección Jumex (Mexico City, Mexico), the Hessel Museum of Art, Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (Annandale-on-Hudson, NY), the Orlando Museum of Art (Orlando, FL), The Ford Foundation (New York, NY), the University Hospitals Art Collection (Cleveland, OH), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) (Los Angeles, CA).
