Editor in Chief Jacqueline Terrebonne Shares Highlights from the Artful Escapes Issue

Big Chief Demond Melancon has been selected as an Artist-to-Watch by Jacqueline Terrebonne for Galerie Magazine. Rooted in the Black Masking tradition of New Orleans, he began learning beadwork at the age of 13 within the Mardi Gras Indian cultural legacy, gradually transforming this inherited craft into a contemporary artistic practice. His work blends intricate beadwork with painterly sensibilities, drawing influence from artists such as Caravaggio and Kerry James Marshall to build richly layered compositions that move between tradition, portraiture, and historical narrative, while expanding into broader reflections on the African diaspora.

His international visibility has continued to grow, including presentations at the Venice Biennale, where his beaded work Ashanti Baako (One) (2023) has been highlighted for its craftsmanship and cultural resonance. In the summer Artful Escapes issue, Terrebonne also features Melancon within a broader selection of global art and design stories, underscoring his rising position within contemporary art and his expanding artistic language.
