Biography

No Martins (b. 1987 in São Paulo, Brazil; lives and works in Brazil) investigates the personal relationships of Afro-Brazilians in daily life. His work investigates issues of territorialism, accessibility, racism, mortality and the high population of incarcerated Black Brazilians. The artist uses painting, performance, and objects to provoke viewers and expose the steep differences in lifestyle due to gender, race, and social class. 

 

Among various collective exhibitions Martins has participated in are Football & Art: A Shared Emotion at Museo Jumex in Mexico City in 2026, the 4th Frestas Trienal de Artes “do caminho um rezo” at Sesc Sorocaba, Brazil in 2026, Dos Brasis: Arte e pensamento negro at the Centro Cultural Sesc Quitandinha, Petrópolis, in 2024 and Sesc Belenzinho, São Paulo, Brazil in 2023; When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting, at Zeitz MOCAA, Cape Town, South Africa  in 2022; 37th Panorama da Arte Brasileira, MAM São Paulo, Brazil in 2022, 21a Bienal de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_VIDEOBRASIL in São Paulo in 2019, and Afro-Atlantic Histories at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and Tomie Ohtake Institute (ITO) in São Paulo in 2018. 

 

Martins has had several individual shows such as Sortilégios de desvio in Museu de Arte do Rio in Brazil in 2026, Everything Under Control at the São Paulo Cultural Center (CCSP), and To those who have gone, to those here and to those who will come at the Pretos Novos Institute (Rio de Janero, Brazil) in 2019. Martins participated in the AIR Program residency in Luanda, Angola, and won the Sesc Contemporary Art Award in 2019.  

 

His work is part of collections MASP, Brazil; MAM São Paulo, Brazil; Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Brazil; and Sesc São Paulo, Brazil.
