No Martins
No Martins (b. 1987 in São Paulo, Brazil) investigates the daily interpersonal relationships of Afro-Brazilians in urban daily life. His work objectifies issues of territorialism, access, racism, mortality and the high population of incarcerated Black Brazilians. The artist uses painting, performance, and objects to provoke viewers and expose the steep differences in lifestyle due to gender, race, and social class.
Among various collective exhibitions Martins participated in are the 21a Bienal de Arte Contemporânea Sesc_VIDEOBRASIL in São Paulo, “PretAtidude” at Sesc Santos, and “What is not forest is political prison” at Reocupa Gallery in São Paulo, all in 2019 and “Afro-Atlantic Histories” at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and Tomie Ohtake Institute (ITO) in 2018.
In 2019, Martins also had three individual shows, “Mine Field” in Baró Gallery (São Paulo, Brazil), “Everything Under Control” at the São Paulo Cultural Center (CCSP), and “To those who have gone, to those here and to those who will come” at the Pretos Novos Institute (Rio de Janero, Brazil). Martins participated in the AIR Program residency in Luanda, Angola, and won the Sesc Contemporary Art Award.
