The exploration of identity through social questioning.
Clotilde Jiménez is a multidisciplinary artist of African American and Puerto Rican roots who uses her art to explore her identity and question social structures. Her work addresses themes such as race, sexuality, and traditions, influenced by diverse cultural experiences. The pandemic and the loss of close family members led her to create La Memoria del Agua, an introspective series on grief and self-knowledge. In her creative process, she seeks freedom and fluidity, allowing ideas to emerge spontaneously from her personal reflections.
The experience of facing racism during her university years was fundamental in her artistic evolution, motivating her to use art as a tool to cope with pain and alienation. One of her most significant projects, La Gruta, explores migration, spirituality, and autonomy, using Nahua mythology as a metaphor for cultural resistance. The central message of her work is authenticity, inviting the audience to embrace their identity and feel enough, regardless of the context.
