We are delighted to announce that Clotilde Jiménez has been chosen as one of the participants in the prestigious Paris 2024 Art Project, coinciding with the upcoming Olympics.
The Cultural Olympiad is an artistic collaborative venture which will consist of events and performances until 8 September 2024, the day of the Closing Ceremony of the Paralympic Games Paris 2024. For every edition of the Games, the Organizing Committee develops a program of “Art Posters” complementing the official poster of the Games, in cooperation with the IOC. This program gives artists a unique creative opportunity to be involved in building the collective memory of the Games.
Two additional features were launched to celebrate the Paralympic Games coming to France for the first time. The additional artists selected include American painter and sculptor Adam Janes, French painter Gilles Elie, French photography duo Elsa & Johanna, French designer Pierre Seinturier, French designer and illustrator Fanny Michaëlis, and French photographer Stéphanie Lacombe.
"When conceptualizing this project, I was researching a lot of historic olympic posters. The Parisian version from 100 years ago, in 1924, made by Jean Droit, featured six white men. I was thinking a lot about what it means to represent your country on a public stage, and I wanted to represent what France looks like now, presenting three figures of black and brown women, representing femininity, sisterhood and strength, olympic ideals." - Clotilde Jiménez
Drawing inspiration from ancient, modern, and contemporary art references, Jiménez explores the societal limitations imposed on the body in terms of race, gender, and sexuality. The artwork embraces both personal perspectives and universal symbolism, encouraging an exploration of the fixed definitions that impact black and queer bodies.
For these posters, Jiménez wanted viewers to look inwards and feel the excitement and grandeur of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. For centuries, there has been a strong connection between athletics and art which testifies to a human desire for physical fulfillment and creative expression. Through his collages, the artist also highlights the diversity of the Games and of France, one hundred years since the last Summer Games were hosted in Paris.
The fourteen artistic posters for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 were revealed on 1 June on the banks of the Seine, for the 2023 edition of Nuit Blanche. They will be on display for one month, and as September 2023 they will tour France thanks to the Terre de Jeux 2024 network.
