As part of the inaugural edition of Suite Berlin, Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to present a compelling series of recent works by Zohra Opoku. Inspired by the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, Opoku's work delves into the mysteries of life, death, and the afterlife, while engaging deeply with the politics of personal identity. This series includes both works on canvas and sculptures, which reflect Opoku's intricate blend of photography, textiles, and symbolism.
Opoku’s practice is distinguished by her ability to transform photography into richly detailed silkscreen compositions, often incorporating sutures that metaphorically stitch together her personal histories. Drawing on the Book of the Dead —an ancient guidebook for navigating the afterlife—Opoku's latest works explore the concepts of mortality and self-authorship, reflecting her desire to assert agency in crafting her own narrative. In these new works, fragments of body parts serve as metaphors for the human spirit, symbolizing the potential for healing and transformation.
The presentation of Opoku's works at Suite Berlin offers a rare opportunity to experience the artist’s ongoing dialogue with mortality, transformation, and identity.
