La Guapa pays homage to strength and resilience of working people in Mexico City, especially during COVID times. In the piece you can see a woman carrying the almost insurmountable weight of a horse onto a trajinera, an boat used since Aztec times for transportation and commerce. In specific, Jiménez is honoring an elderly female street vendor that sets up shop a couple blocks from Jiménez’s home in downtown Mexico City. Every day she navigates the streets of city with her cart, just as her ancestors did in their trajineras in the same spot that in Aztec times used to be a lake. She does this with strength, dignity, and regardless of the difficulties of her trade, aging body, and the shadow of an international health crisis that is leaving a trail of death, and, in her particular case, has gravely affected her business. She does all of this still with a warm heart that allows her to be kind to herself, to others, and even gives her the strength to smile and laugh through adversity. Her example reminds Jiménez that happiness is not just about the circumstances but also how to handle those same circumstances emotionally and mentally. Happiness is a state of mind.
