INDEPENDENT 20TH CENTURY ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF 2026 FAIR AT THE BREUER BUILDING
Artforum previews the fifth edition of Independent 20th Century 2026, which will take place at the Breuer Building in New York and feature its largest roster to date, bringing together more than 130 artists across 56 exhibitors. The article highlights the fair’s commitment to broadening established narratives of 20th-century art by presenting artists whose practices have expanded the geographical, cultural, and political scope of the canon.
Among the announced presentations, Mariane Ibrahim will showcase works by Lorraine O'Grady and José Gamarra. Their inclusion reflects the fair’s emphasis on artists whose work challenges dominant historical perspectives and offers critical reflections on identity, power, and cultural representation. While O'Grady's groundbreaking conceptual practice continues to shape contemporary discourse on race and gender, Gamarra's politically charged paintings are recognized for their examination of colonialism, environmental exploitation, and global systems of power, positioning both artists within the fair's broader effort to reconsider the narratives that define 20th-century art history.
