The two works being shipped from Lagos are her paintings on bluish found fabric, which she found in Mushin, an industrial area of Lagos. For her, the fabric represents the ocean, and the sky, anchors that connect to her American-Jamaican-Nigerian experience. Ogunbiyi uses the flawed fabric, be they stains, or dense blotches of blue dye to determine the composition of the canvas. Using acrylic washes and Japanese ink, Ogunbiyi pays homage to her time studying Japanese—calligraphy especially, in her formative years. She feels that her time spent studying Japanese culture impacted the way that she approaches line within her paintings, sculptures, and ambitious installations. She’s also been interested in my history of botanical drawings especially those that incorporate lines rendered through etching and ink drawing.
