Yes We Can

The Modern Renaissance of Black Art

"YES WE CAN.  The Modern Renaissance of Black Art" is a documentary by Marion Schmidt about the representation and visibility of Black people in contemporary painting and art history.

In the wake of the official portraits of Barack and Michelle Obama painted by two African-American artists, a new generation of Black painters is moving into figurative art. Many have reinvented the art of portraiture with varying degrees of radicalism.

In Paris, French-Somali Mariane Ibrahim is committed to raising the profile of the capital's Black artists, and her galleries have become key venues for artists from the African diaspora. Among are artists represented, Berlin-based Shannon T. Lewis, born in Toronto of Caribbean parents, who explores beauty as a form of resistance. And in Cologne, Nigerian painter Peter Uka who creates memories of his native country in his compositions.
