Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection, curated by Dr. Chaunesti Webb-Johnson with Curatorial Graduate Assistant Lizette London, brings together nearly seventy works from the Spelman College Museum of Fine Art’s permanent collection. The exhibition marks 30 years of the collection and is grounded in dreaming and the Black feminist imagination, exploring ways of knowing, seeing, and creating shaped by Black women’s lived experiences.
The works are organized across five thematic areas inspired by the layers of Earth’s atmosphere: the Root, which grounds the collection in origin and tradition; the Threshold, which evokes crossings through transitional spaces; the Interior, which turns inward toward intimacy and quietude; the Expanse, featuring conceptually daring works and electric color; and the Horizon, where the past meets the future and dissolves into limitless possibility.
Elizabeth Catlett is prominently featured, with her bronze sculpture Standing Woman greeting visitors at the entrance of the museum’s founding gallery, alongside more of her work throughout the exhibition. Catlett is presented alongside artists including Emma Amos, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Firelei Báez, Sonia Boyce, Beverly Buchanan, and Zanele Muholi, among others, in a presentation spanning sculpture, textiles, painting, photography, and mixed media.
