SEBAÄTOU RIJAL & VILLES NOUVELLES AND ANCIENT SHADOWS

Maïmouna Guerresi | Aga Khan Museum
Maïmouna Guerresi's portrait series, located in the Aga Khan Park, (created during her 2020 her residency at the Musée d'Art Contemporain Africain Al Maaden) merges French colonial architectural style with the traditions, culture, and spirituality of Marrakesh.

Inspired by Marrakesh's complex hitory, and built during French colonial rule in the first half of the 20th century, The Villes Nouvelles created a cultural and physical division within the city.

In the portrait series of Sebaätou Rijal's , the artist is inspired by the Seven Saints if Marrakesh by exploring how spiritual growth can bring about changes in perspective, breaking down the barriers caused by extreme individualism in today’s world.
