Independent 20th Century Heads to the Breuer With Its Biggest Edition Yet

In a feature on the forthcoming edition of Independent 20th Century 2026, Daniel Cassady examines the fair’s move to the Breuer Building in New York and its continued commitment to expanding traditional narratives of 20th-century art. Bringing together more than 130 artists across 56 presentations, the fair will be its largest edition yet, with a focus on overlooked histories, rediscoveries, and artists whose contributions have often been marginalized within established art historical frameworks.

Cassady highlights how the relocation to Marcel Breuer’s iconic former museum building signals a new phase for the fair, allowing for a significantly expanded program of exhibitions, performances, talks, and events. Founder Elizabeth Dee describes the transition as “a rebirth of a new concept,” emphasizing the fair’s ambition to foster a dynamic cultural experience that feels closer to an exhibition than a marketplace. Among the artists featured in this year's edition are Lorraine O'Grady and José Gamarra, whose inclusion reflects the fair’s broader effort to foreground diverse artistic perspectives and reconsider the figures that have shaped 20th-century art history.
