Big Chief Demond Melancon
Galerie Magazine

Jacqueline Terrebonne, Galerie Magazine, Mai 20, 2026
Big Chief Demond Melancon has been selected as an Artist-to-Watch by Jacqueline Terrebonne for Galerie Magazine. Rooted in the Black Masking tradition of New Orleans, Melancon began learning beadwork at 13 as part of the Mardi Gras Indian cultural legacy. Over the years, he transformed the craft into a contemporary artistic practice, incorporating painterly techniques and drawing inspiration from figures such as Caravaggio and Kerry James Marshall to create richly detailed works that blend tradition with fine art.

Melancon has gained international recognition, including a presentation at the Venice Biennale. Expanding beyond Black Masking culture, his recent works explore histories of the African diaspora through portraits, historical narratives, and intricately beaded compositions centered on storytelling.
