For One Solid Time, Wet : La piscine dans l’imaginaire

Ian Mwesiga I Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle

Ian Mwesiga’s work is featured alongside artists including David Hockney, Bill Viola, Pipilotti Rist, Elmgreen & Dragset, and Anastasia Samoylova in For One Solid Time, Wet: The Swimming Pool in the Imagination at the Musée des Beaux-Arts Le Locle (MBAL). Co-curated by Federica Chiocchetti and Lou Stoppard, the exhibition explores the swimming pool as a significant motif in contemporary art, bringing together international artists who have used it as a symbol of prosperity and catastrophe, joy and solitude.

The exhibition considers the swimming pool as an architectural, sculptural, geometric, and social space, exploring themes of order, modernity, well-being, intimacy, and collective dreaming. It also examines the contradictions surrounding water management and unequal access to water against the backdrop of the climate crisis. The exhibition originated from a historical proposal to replace the MBAL with an indoor swimming pool, which the curators transformed into the starting point for this exploration of the pool as a political and cultural space.
