Sortilégios de desvio brings together a body of paintings by São Paulo–based artist No Martins that foreground scenes of everyday life—gatherings, celebrations, and moments of tension—rendered with a charged sense of intimacy and complexity. In these works, the quotidian becomes a site of reflection, where personal and collective histories intersect.
Martins’ visual language merges the fantastical with the familiar, constructing compositions in which color, gesture, and symbolism articulate layered narratives around (in)justice and structures of power. His paintings do not merely depict scenes; they activate them, inviting viewers to consider how histories of Black life in Brazil are shaped, remembered, and continuously negotiated.
Across the exhibition, recurring elements of affection, spirituality, memory, and imagination permeate the works, generating a space that oscillates between recognition and projection. In this interplay, Martins evokes both a sense of belonging and the persistent urgency of protection and resistance. The images resonate as sites of encounter—where the visible and the intangible converge to challenge dominant readings of history and identity.
