Lorraine O'Grady
Lorraine O’Grady (1934–2024) est née à Boston de parents antillais. Talentueuse universitaire, elle a été éduquée à la prestigieuse Girls Latin School avant d’étudier l’économie et la littérature espagnole au Wellesley College (promotion de 1955). Alors qu’elle était encore étudiante, elle a réussi l’exigeant examen du Management Intern Program (MIP) du gouvernement américain et a travaillé comme économiste de recherche au Bureau of Labor Statistics. En 1961, O’Grady a quitté son poste au Département du Travail pour écrire de la fiction, avant d’intégrer l’Iowa Writers Workshop en 1965. En 1968, elle travaillait à Chicago dans une agence de traduction commerciale tout en faisant du bénévolat pour Jesse Jackson et son organisation Operation Breadbasket. Cependant, après avoir ouvert sa propre agence de traduction et réalisé d’importants contrats pour Playboy et Encyclopædia Britannica, elle a décidé de quitter sa carrière de traductrice. En 1973, O’Grady s’est installée à New York et est devenue critique pour Rolling Stone et The Village Voice, écrivant sur des artistes tels que les Allman Brothers, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Bob Marley and the Wailers, et Sly and The Family Stone. Après avoir été insatisfaite de son rôle dans le monde de la musique, elle a accepté une offre pour enseigner la littérature à la School of Visual Arts (SVA). En 1994, elle a doublé la longueur de son essai de 1992, « Olympia’s Maid », en y ajoutant un remarquable « Postscript », dans lequel elle développait son argument sur la subjectivité des femmes noires à travers sa théorisation novatrice du Both/And. En 2008, O’Grady a également lancé un site web artistique qui sert d’archive publique vivante. En 2012, elle a fait don de son archive analogique au Wellesley College, la rendant accessible à la recherche pour les étudiants et le grand public.
O’Grady a fait l’objet de nombreuses expositions personnelles. Sa rétrospective, Lorraine O’Grady: Both/And, au Brooklyn Museum, New York (2021), a voyagé au Weatherspoon Art Museum à Greensboro, Caroline du Nord (2022) et au Davis Museum du Wellesley College, Massachusetts (2024).
