Salah Elmur: The Land of the Sun

4 February - 3 May 2025 Mexico City

Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to present The Land of The Sun by Salah Elmur in Mexico City.

This exhibition, the artist's first at the gallery and in Latin America, brings together a series of recent paintings through which Elmur transports us to the landscapes of his childhood near the Blue Nile in Khartoum, Sudan. In them, we discover characters immersed in a daily life that, although radiant and happy, hold a subtle hint of melancholy, removed from the catastrophes that would later tear apart the country from which he is currently exiled. With his luminous and surreal pictorial language, Salah Elmur appeals to the imagination, offering fertile ground where impossible landscapes flourish. Despite their distant origin, his timeless works unexpectedly evoke the colors, textures, and themes of Mexico.

The exhibition will feature a foreword by Morad Montazami, curator and editor specializing in Arab, African, and Asian modernities, and will coincide with Mexico City's Art Week, opening on February 4 and remaining open to the public until May 24, 2025.

"When we were children, we played in the shadow of mud and fired brick walls so that the sun wouldn't strike us with its whips of fire, in my country: the land of the sun." - Salah Elmur
