Leasho Johnson

I am a place as much as I am a flavour

In Paris with Leasho Johnson as he unfolds I am a place as much as I am a flavour, his first solo presentation in Europe and his second with the gallery, at a pivotal moment in his practice as he moves between Jamaica and Chicago.

In the video, Johnson speaks about Anansi as a guiding figure in his practice, the trickster whose shifting forms blur the boundaries between human, animal, and myth, and whose logic of transformation informs his approach to storytelling and image-making.

He also reflects on colour and blackness, and on his process of sourcing and producing his own pigments, working with charcoal and raw materials as a way of engaging blackness as a material field shaped by history and transformation rather than a fixed tone.

The exhibition brings together nine paintings and a single work on paper, unfolding through layered processes of paint, collage, and material experimentation.

On view from June 6 to July 25, 2026.
