8 Must-See Solo Gallery Shows in October

In its October gallery guide, Galerie highlights Clotilde Jiménez’s solo exhibition in our Chicago space, featuring layered mixed-media collages that draw on the artist’s personal experiences and complex family history. Born in Honolulu to Puerto Rican and African-American parents and raised in Philadelphia, the Mexico City-based artist combines found materials, painting, ceramics, and sculpture to explore identity, race, gender, sexuality, and cultural memory. Treating each exhibition like a book, Jiménez develops a visual memoir that brings together personal figures, symbols, and narratives.

The exhibition continues his exploration of intergenerational relationships, family silences, and stories passed down. In Invitation to the Altar, an older man plays a cuatro as a nun raises a Bible, while three women gather around a child lying on the floor in a scene of reverence and care. Through such layered compositions, Jiménez examines how Blackness is expressed across different contexts and environments.
