NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART ADDS A SLEW OF NEW ARTISTS TO ITS COLLECTION
The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, has announced a series of new acquisitions that expand its collection across modern, contemporary, and colonial Latin American art. The additions include works by several artists entering the museum’s collection for the first time, reflecting an effort to broaden its representation of diverse artistic histories and practices across the Americas and beyond. The institution described the acquisitions as reflecting “the kaleidoscopic breadth of art of the Americas and beyond.”
Among the newly acquired artists is Lorraine O’Grady, whose Mlle Bourgeoise Noire Goes to the New Museum(1981/2007) has entered the National Gallery’s collection. The group of black-and-white photographs documents O’Grady’s groundbreaking performance at the New Museum, in which she embodied the fictional character Mlle Bourgeoise Noire to confront the limited visibility of Black artists within the contemporary art world.
