How often do we feel an uncomfortable urge to fill up the silence in our lives with anything in reach?
all space is not a void.
There is so much necessary life and emotion that resides in the open air of all things quiet.
My work is about touching the uneasiness of vulnerability and attempting to cradle its softness.
What is gentle in the world often becomes misread as weak. However, gentleness requires such focus and demands of us so much clarity that truly it is the antithesis of weakness.
Canvas-colored paint on top of the exposed fabric it echos reads as rawness.
Rawness is exposure. And exposure is unnerving.
There is bravery in sitting in the silence because it can be frightening to hear your own thoughts so loudly / or to leave so much visual time between brushstrokes. Though, on the other side of this risk lies incomparable reflection, and we embark on the journey based on a prayer to be transformed.
You can create the sanctuary you need anywhere in the world with any materials. In your car on the way to work, on a dance floor with family, in a church pew, or a studio wall, sanctuary is always available if we choose it.
Marking these lines in oil and ink are evidence of my own personal sanctuaries. I offer them as available sites for others to hold and also be held. It’s an offering not predicated on a sense of enlightened completion, or having arrived at a particular destination fully formed. Instead, the work is openly sharing process / willing to embrace the full range of beauty and deep flaws embedded within.
