Njinga was a queen in Angola, in the Ndongo and Matamba Kingdom who represents the liberation against the Portuguese colonizers.
The artwork fuses different parts of costume from various court portraits. For her dress, I chose the colors of the independent flag from Angola - Red, Yellow and Black.
The face of Njinga comes from a collection of photographs taken during the colonial period in West and Central Africa. She was the Daughter of the Sultan of Bamum, Lydia Mongwene, Cameroon.
