Mariane Ibrahim presents works by emerging artists, Clotilde Jiménez and Amoako Boafo for its presentation at the fair, exploring a visual dialogue of figuration and expressionism.
Boafo re-introduces the ‘noblesse’ of black figurations inspired by his close entourage, while reviving classical portraitures. The brushstrokes are thick and gestural, the contours of the body’s almost soften into abstraction. Alongside, Jiménez decomposes and restructures figures into new forms. The layers in his work inform the complex notions of identity, using found materials combined with imagery gleaned from magazines and drawn or painted elements.
