Carmen Neely explores the nuances of semantics in her work, viewing the differences between various types of lines as tools to navigate and express personal and collective histories. Her canvases, marked by vibrant colors and dynamic strokes, embody a tension between memory, language, and emotion, reflecting the interconnectedness of experiences that shape identity over time. Each mark interacts with others, suggesting that meanings are fluid and context-dependent. Neely's paintings evoke a sense of catharsis, emphasizing the ongoing process of renegotiation of values and identities influenced by familial and social ties, ultimately revealing her evolving relationship with selfhood and interpretation.
