George Clinton, May the Funk Be with Him

In a recent interview with France 24, George Clinton, the 84-year-old pioneer of P-Funk and father of psychedelic Afro-futurism, reflected on his groundbreaking musical career with Parliament and Funkadelic. Known for his legendary Mothership Connection and iconic four-hour concerts, Clinton described funk as “my secret weapon… If you’re funky, you can adapt to anything.” He recalled the freedom of the late 1960s psychedelic era, which allowed him to explore music without limits.

Clinton has now brought that same improvisational, “by feel” approach to painting, exhibiting at our Parisian space as part of Door to the CosmosThe show features abstract paintings, a sculpture of the Mothership, and playful dog motifs—originally sketched as autographs and known as Atomic Dogs. Clinton explains, “I paint like I make music… They are what they are; I do them by feel.” Despite legal battles over his catalog and critiques of U.S. politics, he continues to create and inspire, proving that funk—and creativity—remain central to his life.
