Mariane Ibrahim to Represent Michi Meko

Michi Meko | Representation

Mariane Ibrahim is pleased to announce the global representation of Michi Meko, an Atlanta-based artist who navigates the parallels of urban and rural realities through an experimental and affective application of cartography. His works layer nautical maps and navigational syntax upon abstracted natural environments, seeking a vessel that connects an inner landscape to the vast histories and mythologies of race, place, and memory.

On canvas and works on paper, Meko invents perceptual boundaries of light and shadow, offering a heightened sense of vision, as he maps nocturnal landscapes of history and horror that emulate a resilience for existence The interplay of light and texture within his canvas and installation work imposes a spectrum of black, engaging material beyond its pigment to capture the contradictions of trauma and survival within the gravity of the land he maps. His intricate network of white charcoal marks, spiral rhythms, and midnight tonalities reflect an ongoing dialogue with the cultural and ecological histories of fugitivity within the American South.

"The South is full of invisible violent moments," Meko reflects. "Some are marked by plaques; others are unseen but felt—storms may sing the blues, rivers may whisper." Through his construction of light refractions and variations in opacity on the canvas, Meko interrogates the presence and absence of memory, both embodied and within the physical landscape. His geographic compositions are imbued with psychological contemplations of freedom and fear that offer viewers an opportunity to confront complex histories while celebrating the transformative potential of art.

On the occasion of this partnership, Mariane Ibrahim reflectsMichi Meko’s works are magical in the way they are ever relevant, and ever evolving metaphor for oneself, life, and the worlds that we inhabit. His abstract voice anchored in deep constellations in parallel with his ability to teeter into the past and future, is ingratiating. His language is infinite, in permanent shifts and invites the viewer to acknowledge and embrace a world of wonders.
