In an interview at his Atlanta studio with Tariro MzezewaPatrick Eugène reflects on how his relationship with his Haitian heritage has shaped his identity and artistic vision. Growing up in New York, he initially tried to hide his background, but everything changed after connecting with Haitian student groups and visiting Haiti. Experiencing the elegance, pride, and strength of its people inspired him to center Haitian and Haitian American life in his art. His paintings—now on view at our Art Basel Paris booth L13—capture quiet, intimate moments, often adorned with floral motifs in tribute to his family’s history.

Eugène’s practice has grown into a multidisciplinary career spanning painting, collage, sculpture, and photography, all grounded in honoring his culture. This year, his vision extends into fashion through a collaboration with Dior for the Lady Dior Art project. His three handbag designs, titled “The Pearl of the Antilles”, draw on Haiti’s warm landscapes and textures, incorporating raffia, gold, lace, and pearls to celebrate the beauty of the island.
