THE FAMOUS SIX: AN AFTERNOON IN ACCRA WITH AMOAKO BOAFO AND HIS ARTIST FRIENDS.

For an article in Kinfolk Magazine, Amoako Boafo and six Ghanaian artist friends, known as the “Famous Six,” gather at his residency space dot.ateliers in Accra, Ghana, to reflect on how their bond began two decades ago at the Ghanatta College of Art and Design, where they forged a circle of friendship, rivalry, and mutual support that continues to shape their artistic journeys.

What begins as a casual afternoon by the pool—filled with laughter, inside jokes, and shared memories—reveals the depth of their connection. From the playful “hot beans” ritual that taught lessons in endurance to their balance of competition and encouragement, the group has sustained a bond that outlasts distance, fame, and career pressures.

Each artist now pursues ambitious paths: international solo shows, group exhibitions, and new projects. Boafo, the most widely recognized, continues to invest in Accra, planning exhibitions, architectural collaborations, and even sports academies. Yet despite their growing visibility on the global stage, they emphasize the importance of creative critique, mutual motivation, and loyalty.

Their story is not only about artistic success but also about sustaining two decades of kinship in a field often defined by ambition and isolation. In the end, what lingers is the image of six artists—still laughing, still pushing each other, and still circling back to the friendship that began it all.
