Glenstone Museum presents Lorraine O’Grady’s Cutting Out CONYT (1977/2017), in Room 11 of the Pavillions, a series of “haiku-like” diptych-poems that revisit her 1977 work, Cutting Out the New York Times (CONYT). Influenced by her experience as a research economist and intelligence analyst, transforms language through years of analyzing newspapers. Forty years later, she reimagines 250 collages into twenty-six paired panels, creating “counter confessional” poetry that blends public and personal language.
This presentation is the first complete display of Cutting Out CONYT as quadriptychs, advancing her theory of the Both/And, which challenges Western dualism. The work uses diptychs to intertwine public and private, political and intimate themes, promoting an "either/and" logic that allows for hybrid identities rather than rigid binaries.
