Johannes Nagel studied ceramics at the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein, Halle, Germany. He seeks to challenge the widely accepted status of pottery as a functional, domestic and decorative craft, and turns to clay as the privileged arena for his formal and conceptual explorations. Through an eclectic array of vessels he rehearses the timeless debate of form vs. function, control vs. spontaneity, and rigour vs. improvisation.

The artist has had three solo shows with Gallery FUMI: "I Hardly Ever Thought of Flowers" in 2015, "Johannes Nagel: Vessels, Perhaps 2010-2017" in 2018 and "FARBFELD | New Works by Johannes Nagel" in 2022. His work is in the permanent collections of international institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, UK, Musée Ariana, Geneva, Switzerland, Keramikmuseum Westerwald, Höhr-Grenzhausen, and Keramion, Frechen, Germany.
