Dutty Boukman is an imaginary vision of Dutty Boukman, a voodoo priest who was one of the key historical characters of the slave Haitian revolution, represented in front of an old flemish coastal landscape.

Boukman led an insurrection in Northern Haiti in the harbour of Cap-Haitien, represented like a sculptural heroe, his body is composed of a Hercules torso, part of an african wooden mask and a hat owned by Napoleon. The mask was sold in auction a few years ago. The face’s picture comes from old photographs taken in the early 20th century in West Africa by an unknown photographer.
