Clément Ghys, M Le Magazine du Monde

Lorraine O’Grady is featured in this weekend’s M Le Magazine du Monde, in a special issue titled “Recadrages” by Clément Ghys, dedicated to celebrating her legacy. O’Grady’s work is currently honored in Paris with two major exhibitions: “Joie collective – apprendre à flamboyer” at the Palais de Tokyo (through May 11) and a solo exhibition at our Parisian space (through May 31).

The article highlights O’Grady, also known as “Mlle Bourgeoise Noire,” as a pioneering Black woman who challenged the predominantly white, male art world of 1980s New York. It focuses on her groundbreaking 1983 performance “Art Is...”, in which she and her performers used golden frames during the African American Day Parade in Harlem to honor Black spectators and address racial exclusion in the art world.
