For Akum, Peter Uka explained that the word means my own or mine. He said it refers to his youngest sister. When he left home, she was still a baby, and the next time he saw her she was already a grown woman. He described imagining her during her school years—how she might have carried herself—and noted that the painting expresses how he feels she may look back on that period of her life. He added that missing those years is what led him to make the work in that particular format.
