This portrait is also an imaginary vision of Dutty Boukman, a voodoo priest who was one of the key historical figures of the slave Haitian revolution. He is represented in front of an abstract background digitally printed on fabric. He led an insurrection in the North of Haiti in the harbour of Cap Haitien.
Represented as a sculptural heroe, his body is composed of a Hercules torso, part of an African wooden mask and a hat owned by Napoleon. It was sold at an auction a few years ago.
The face pictured comes from old photographs taken in the early 20th century in West Africa by an unknown photographer.
