The girls in Their Private Garden, 2016 is inspired by stories of Muslim women, primarily of African origin known as 'Gāriyah.' These women, initially taken as slaves during early Muslim conquests, often rose to high social positions due to their intellectual, cultural, and strategic abilities, becoming heads of state, queens, and spiritual leaders. Unfortunately, history has rendered these remarkable women invisible.
Guerresi states “I chose to represent these women in an allegorical and metaphorical form, symbolizing spiritual elevation and capturing them in moments of transformation and suspension.”
