The Armory Show: Florine Démosthène

The 2019 booth was dedicated to Haitian-American female artist, Florine Démosthène. For the fourth participation at The Armory Show Mariane Ibrahim continues to dedicate the platform to exceptional female artists.

Using non-traditional materials like glitter and mylar, her work evoke a strong animated struggle, a fight over existing power. The superpositions of her alter-egos, reflect the resilience of the pre-fabricated codes of aesthetics dictated by a set of behaviors.  One cannot escape the commodification and fetishization of the black body. The Artist is exposing a new physical paradigm, using gender and social attributes to escape determinism.

She states “I feel my work is more about femininity and sensuality and what it means to be a woman, within the body you reside (which is heavily coded with race, size, skin color, etc.)”. Her subjects excavate new diasporic mythologies and ancient heroine figures while reconstructing Black female heroine personas."
